The Area
This Malesherbes/Monceau neighborhood is in a vibrant quartier of literary, musical and diplomatic influences that combine to provide a rich
Paris living experience. Within two blocks of the apartment are the Ecole Normale de Musique, dating from the 19th century, where you often hear
the sounds of piano, strings, and voice wafting along the boulevard; the Malesherbes campus of the Sorbonne and the prestigious Lycée Carnot, with
their polyglot mix of students; and a sprinkling of embassies and consulates whose international staffs fill the local restaurants and cafes at
lunchtime.
The neighborhood has long been a favorite of literary and musical figures. In a small park outside the nearby Malesherbes Metro station are
statues of Alexandre Dumas, one of the area's first residents and author of "The Three Musketeers"; his father, a general who served under Napoleon,
and his son, also an author. Composer Alfred Cortot gave music lessons nearby before founding the Ecole Normale, and Graham Greene lived in our
building. And to top it off, a few blocks away is the Rue de Levis, one of Paris's famed blocks-long open air market streets where the aromas of
fresh fruit and vegetables, bread, cheese, pastries and rotisserie meats provide all of the fixings for wonderful take home meals to enjoy in a
sophisticated apartment setting.
Location
The apartment is located between Rue Jouffroy-d'Abbans and Rue Viete and is just three blocks to the north of the Eighth Arrondissement.
The No. 94 bus directly across from the apartment goes across Place de la Concorde to the left bank with its final stop at Gare Montparnasse
(except Sundays). The No.31 on Jouffroy-D'Abbans ends at Etoile in one direction and Gare de l'Est in the other. The No. 3 Metro line is two blocks away.
There is a great selection of restaurants from Michelin-rated to small family-run eateries. The neighborhood has a variety of boulangeries,
patisseries, cheese shops and ethnic dining experiences, including Lebanese, Japanese and Italian.
The beautifully landscaped Parc Monceau is four blocks from the apartment. It has small ponds, jogging paths and a well-used playground for children.
